Counseling Training: Learn By Doing

Learn by Doing

Most counseling training is based on watching, listening, and taking notes.

But when staff are supporting people in real-world situations,
they need more than knowledge.

They need skills they can actually use in the moment.

Why “Learn by Doing” Matters

Frontline staff working in queer and trans communities are often navigating:

  • Complex emotional conversations
  • Crisis and uncertainty
  • Trauma and systemic stress
  • Situations where there’s no clear script

In those moments, it’s not about remembering theory.

It’s about:

  • What you say
  • How you respond
  • How you stay grounded

These are skills that can only be developed through practice.

How Our Training Works

Our training is designed to build real counseling capacity through experience.

Each session includes:

  • Brief, focused teaching
  • Small group practice
  • Real-time coaching
  • Structured feedback

Participants actively practice in every session.

Practice in Real Roles

In small groups, participants rotate through three roles:

Counselor
Practice responding in counseling adherence in real-time conversations

Client
Experience what it feels like to receive support

Coder
Classify (code) counselor's utterances and provide structured feedback

This allows participants to:

  • Try new approaches
  • See what works and what doesn’t
  • Build confidence through repetition

Feedback That Builds Skill

Feedback is a core part of the learning process.

Participants receive:

  • Immediate, practical feedback
  • Guidance on how to improve
  • Reinforcement of what they’re doing well

Over time, this helps staff:

  • Develop more effective responses
  • Increase their confidence
  • Stay grounded in complex conversations

Designed for Real-World Work

This approach is specifically designed for organizations serving queer communities.

It supports staff to:

  • Respond without overstepping or shutting down
  • Avoid defaulting to advice-giving
  • Work with ambivalence and resistance
  • Build trust with clients

The goal is not perfection.

It’s to build reliable, practical skills that can be used in everyday interactions.

What This Means for Your Organization

When staff learn by doing, they don’t just understand counseling concepts.

They are able to:

  • Apply skills in real conversations
  • Support clients more effectively
  • Work more consistently across teams
  • Feel more confident in their role

This strengthens both staff capacity and client outcomes.

Listening is a key counselling skill
